“In the best possible shape for the 2024 Dakar”
One of the biggest stars on the Portuguese offroad scene, Antonio Maio has just won the Portuguese National All-Terrain Championship (Baja) for 8th time! The 36-year-old made his debut on the Dakar in Peru, but mechanical issues prevented him reaching the finish line in Lima. The following year, when the rally switched to Saudi Arabia, he was in the hunt for a top-15 finish but suffered a crash that forced him to settle for 27th place overall. On the 2022 Dakar Antonio finished in 21st place, while last year he was forced out with a mechanical issue on the 5th stage.
“Although I’m a privateer rider, as a military officer in the National Republican Guard (Portugal’s police force) I get the chance to work hard on my physical condition so as to be in the best possible shape for the 2024 Dakar. My goal is to finish in the top 15 so I can find a place in a factory team.”
